DIY insulated van curtains - removable, machine- washable, repurposed

YouTube Video: DIYing Insulated Curtains For Our Van

When we first got our van a couple months ago, we immediately began to envision some changes we could make to fit our lifestyle.

This van would be a great way to travel year-round, but there were a couple things we wanted to add to make it more comfortable during the colder months of the year. For one, we wanted to install a heater (stay tuned!). And I also wanted to create a barrier to protect our bed from the elements. Initially, the bed would be exposed if we ever opened the back of the van. If there was any sort of snow, rain, wind, or dust, it would get all over our bed. And if we were staying anywhere for an extended amount of time, we were looking to prevent this.

So, in today’s YouTube video, I tackle making some custom curtains to fit in the back of our van.

I was hoping to create something with the following features:

Machine-washable

Insulated

Heavy and stiff enough to stay put

Fasten to the bottom of the bed frame

Removable/moveable

My design was inspired by envelopes-style comforter covers to help contain the insulation, while also providing easy access to take the insulation in and out.

Join me (and Momo and Joe!) as I measure, plan, repurpose, cut, sew, craft, and attach these curtains.

We put the curtains to the test when we were stuck in Mammoth Lakes during the biggest storm of the month… but that’s a story for another time.
